The Junior Dirt Skills Program is a joint initiative of the Port Adelaide Cycling Club and the Adelaide Mountain Bike Club.

Our main aim is teach children the skills and etiquette to increase their competence, confidence, and enjoyment of riding bikes in natural and off-road environments.

The course caters for girls and boys aged from 4 to 11 years and is tailored and structured to suit their various abilities.

Each session will be split into 4 to 5 groups, loosely based around the children’s ability on a bike. The sessions will run for 1.5 hours and will start at 9:30 am at the respective venues listed below. (venues are subject to change with advanced notice)

Our approach

We are dedicated to fostering a safe and fun atmosphere that nurtures a love for cycling and the outdoors. We want to make it fun. One of the great joys in life is riding a bike, something we never forget. Most current research shows the best way to develop young riders is to focus on their skills and ensure they are in a fun environment to keep them interested and developing.

Skills and topics

Skills learned:

      • Bike handling
      • Descending skills
      • Clearing obstacles
      • Bike safety
      • Proper technique
      • Race craft and etiquette
Related topics covered:

      • Bike care
      • Nutrition & hydration
      • Respect for the outdoors
      • Respect for other riders

Social activities

We encourage parents/guardians to help out, however there is no expectation for them to do so. Parents are welcome to leave the children and return at the end of the session. Please let me know if you can help out so we can reduce group sizes and get more participants in.

Our experience

Everyone involved in coaching is enthusiastic mountain and/or cyclocross riders that want to help the next generation of riders enjoy riding and the outdoors.

Feedback from past programs was to incorporate more natural terrain and challenges for the intermediate and advanced children. To achieve this we will use a variety of venues however they will still be suitable for beginners too.

Throughout the year there will be other events that the children may be interested in participating, we will keep you informed as these come about.

All children must have a current 'Dirtmaster' MTBA membership to participate in the course, for insurance purposes.  It will also allow them to participate in other events during the year, including MTB and cyclo-cross races.  Previous participants in the course will already have a membership card, with a membership number. You will need your child's membership number handy to proceed to register for the Junior Dirt Skills Program.

If you child does not already have a membership, please choose from one of the following clubs and sign them up for 12 months as per one of the links below:

Port Adelaide Cycling Club Dirtmaster Membership ($49)

Adelaide Mountain Bike Club Dirtmaster Membership ($55)
